Taipei — The Red Cross of the Republic of China held a series of "Rescue in Times of Emergency. Protect Each Other" activities at the Grand Pacific Hotel in Taipei on September 13 , 2015. These events commemorated World First Aid Day, urging the public to pay attention to the importance of first aid education and skills, and to enhance public emergency response capabilities and legal knowledge.
The event, presided over by Red Cross President Pan Wei-ta, witnessed the touching stories of first aid heroes. The event also recognized seven individuals and volunteers who bravely stepped forward to save lives in emergencies. Each received a certificate and a $ 3,000 cash prize, encouraging the public to learn first aid skills and bravely offer assistance. The event also featured an awards ceremony for the "First Aid with Me; Saving Lives Together" short video and essay competition, featuring five winners sharing their true stories that exemplified the spirit of volunteerism and the power of first aid.
Each recipient of the Bo Ai Rescue Award bravely stepped forward in an emergency. For example, Mr. Xu Zhenyu, current Chairman of the Taiwan Chilblain Development Association, performed CPR on a collapsed OHCA patient at a Taipei MRT station . He also guided on-site personnel in obtaining and using an AED to defibrillate the patient, restoring his heartbeat and breathing on the spot. Furthermore, nurses Shi Huashan and Chen Yawen, both employed at Linkou Chang Gung Memorial Hospital, bravely performed emergency resuscitation on a patient experiencing cardiac arrest during an EVA Air flight. Firefighter Shen Yixin, currently employed at the Taipei City Government Fire Department, bravely performed CPR on a critically injured OHCA victim at the scene of a car accident on the Tamsui-Jinhua Highway during her off-duty hours , selflessly dedicating herself to saving precious lives.
In addition, to enhance the public's practical response capabilities in emergency situations, the afternoon lecture will feature Vice Dean Wang Zonglun of the Fu Jen Catholic University School of Medicine, Chairman Xie Mingru of the Chinese Emergency Medical Technology Association, and Chairman Xu Zhenyu of the Taiwan Public Chiropractic Development Association. They will respectively deliver lectures on first aid-related laws and the principle of "good faith assistance," the theory of CPR and high-quality CPR , and the practice of hemostasis skills.
