Visa: Taiwan travelers spend more in Japan ahead of the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020

Taiwan travelers spend more in Japan ahead of the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020

  • Tokyo, Osaka and Okinawa are the top three destinations by total spending;
  • Visa cardholders stand to win a trip for two to Tokyo with “Visa Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 themed” campaign/lucky draw

TAIPEI, Taiwan, November 11, 2019 – Total spending on Visa cards by travellers from Taiwan to Japan has risen over the past year, according to Visa,[1] and is expected to rise ahead of the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 in the coming summer.
Given the tailwind from the Summer Olympic Games Tokyo 2020, the Japan National Tourism Organization aims to attract 40 million inbound tourists by 2020,[2] a significant jump from the 31 million visitors in 2018. Taiwan is the third largest inbound market after Mainland China and South Korea. [3]  Visa’s own research and analysis also indicate that spending among Taiwan travellers to Japan will also increase accordingly.
By looking at total Visa spending alone, Tokyo (26 percent) is the top destination followed by Osaka (14 percent) and Okinawa (6 percent) injecting more than NT$26 million per day into the three cities’ economies. Yet destination with the highest spending per transaction is not Tokyo. Sapporo ranks first at NT$6,660, followed by Nagoya at NT$5,100, and then Tokyo at NT$4,200.
Unlike other destinations, travellers spend proportionately more at department stores than for accommodation. Pharmacy, general retail shops and discount stores made up the top most shopping categories for Taiwanese tourists.[5]
Visa cardholders in Taiwan can have fewer expenses to worry about. Visa today launched “Visa Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 themed lucky draw” campaign, where participants can stand a chance to win travel packages worth NT$400,000.[6] Six winners will be randomly selected in lucky draws. The package includes round-trip air tickets for two travellers, airport pick-up service, hotel accommodation, Olympic Games accesses, and a US$300 Visa pre-paid card and Visa welcome gift worth US$250.  The lucky draw will start from now and end on January 31 2020.
To participate, cardholder makes cross-border purchase above NT$1,000 by Visa credit card or Visa debit card issued in Taiwan – both face-to-face and online transactions – and then register at https://www.visa.com.tw/campaign/OBSP/.
