Taipei, Taiwan -- 3M, a U.S. company with a century-long history, celebrates its 50th anniversary of doing business in Taiwan this year. Driven by its brand spirit of "Science Applied to Life," 3M is committed to delivering a sustainable lifestyle by bringing innovations to life. 3M held its grand 50th anniversary celebration on April 12th in Taipei, during which the company highlighted its five core strategic focus areas: life-long health care, connected safety, energy management, digitalized infrastructure, and environmental sustainability. These focus areas fall under the theme of "Imagine the Future." During the event, 3M Taiwan also announced its intention to assist Taiwanese industries in their efforts to transform to intelligent manufacturing and smart living. Additionally, 3M leadership announced the relocation of 3M Taiwan headquarters into Nankang Software Park – offering closer proximity to customers and future commercial trends.
Wei Moline, President of Greater China Area at 3M, said, "Taiwan has been a prominent overseas market for 3M due to its strong technology foundation, high flexibility, and competitive international talents. Out of the company’s 70 subsidiaries worldwide, 3M Taiwan has maintained its top-10 spot in terms of revenue contribution." Looking back over the past 50 years, 3M has been well known not only for its consumer and healthcare solutions, but it has also made significant investments to assist Taiwan in the development of telecommunication and power infrastructure. 3M has also been active in helping Taiwanese industries upgrade production technology from textile, optical materials, and semiconductors to energy; making it one of the most significant contributors to Taiwan's industrial development. In the future, 3M expects to continue to invest resources into its growing presence in Taiwan.
Veronica Acurio, Vice President and Managing Director of 3M Taiwan, said, "Science and innovation have been core to our corporate spirit. We see great innovative capacity and solution development potential in Taiwan. We engage with Taiwan customers, and we understand their processes, their problems, and their promises to their customers. “
Veronica Acurio also said,” Our science not only impacts our customers, it makes a difference in the way we work. When people grow, our company grows. We invest in their success and foster engagement on many levels, including networking, collaboration, and diversity and inclusion. We really believe in hiring good people and leaving them alone to do what they do best – that, combined with 3M’s unique “15% Culture” encourages employees to proactively pursue innovative ideas that personally excite them. In addition, our strong ethical culture and commitment to do business the right way builds trust with Taiwan customers.”
3M Taiwan applies science in collaborative ways to improve lives daily. With more than half a century of engagement with Taiwan, 3M is proud of the achievements and solutions that influences almost everything around us- in ways people may not realize. You find it in the transportation that moves us, our homes, offices, hospitals and buildings. It’s in our smartphones and stationery, the energy that lights a room, even the clothes we wear, the water we drink and the air we breathe. 3M Taiwan developed local solutions including anti-mite bedding, an air purifying dehumidifier, acne absorbing covers, and disposable flosser. Those products were all inspired by demands of the Taiwanese customers and made possible by the 3M team in Taiwan.
In terms of industrial electronics, 3M continues to invest manpower and resources into semiconductor material solution to grow alongside its semiconductor partners in Taiwan. Meanwhile, 3M is also targeting new technologies and applications such as intelligent manufacturing, automated materials, IoT, cloud computing, auto electronics, Internet of vehicles, robotics, VR and AR for future growth.
3M Taiwan develops five core strategic focus areas
Life-long Healthcare – Preventative care designed to support life-long health
Taiwan's healthcare system is undergoing rapid changes from modification to National Health Insurance benefits, increasing demand for healthcare services with the increase of new long-term care practices. 3M is well-positioned to respond as it has relevant experience in supplying healthcare and personal care solutions to accommodate those changes. In the healthcare segment, 3M offers reliable and high-quality healthcare supplies at reasonable cost to the benefit of patients, and thereby contributes to the healthcare system. In terms of personal care, 3M continues making improvement to solutions in ways that would enable more convenient self-treatment at home.
Connected Safety – Delivering trustworthy safety solutions for workplace and transportation
Safety is the foundation for any kind of progress, and 3M's safety protection solutions cover a broad range from food safety, work site/factory/worker safety to traffic safety. In addition to introducing solutions that offer world-class comprehensive protections, 3M is constantly seeking breakthroughs by incorporating new technologies into its solutions. The use of VR technology in factory fall-prevention equipment, for example, is an attempt to escalate safety from the solution level to the experience level for more advanced protection.
Digitalized Infrastructure – Bring new efficient solutions to future digital world
As the era of 5G and IoT approaches, 3M has invested enormous resources to promote digitalization and application of automated solutions in Taiwan. Through the supply of critical materials for the semiconductor industry, offering energy-efficient and environment-friendly immersion-cooling technology (3M™ Novec™ Engineered Fluid) for corporate data centers, and  connection of consumer solutions (e.g. air purifiers) to IoT, 3M takes part in the development of digital infrastructure in Taiwan. 3M is also committed in the development of advanced solution technologies and the supply of materials needed for automation to improve solution efficiency and support industry upgrades. From new abrasive materials for robotic arms, glues and tapes for automated solution to 3D printing materials, 3M continues to find ways to assist customers and help them reduce the need for labor while increasing solution efficiency at the same time.
Energy Management – To improve energy efficiency and solve energy shortage issues
Green energy is the key to energy transformation and has been a major issue for government and industries. 3M has been active in this area by developing proprietary energy solutions that assist in the solution of green energy while achieve energy-saving benefits at the same time. Among the many solutions are 3M's innovative materials, which are being applied to solar power, wind power and green energy generators, and thermal films that are commonly used by the public for energy conservation.
Environmental Sustainability - Focused on providing clean air and water
3M's sustainability efforts began in 1975, following the launch of the 3P (Pollution Prevention Pays) program. Scope of the 3P program has been escalated in Taiwan in recent years as a result of growing attention around energy and carbon reduction from the world and the local government, and 3M was able to turn in exceptional results for 2018, including: 65.0 % reduction in VOC release, 18.7 % reduction in waste, and 26.7 % improvement in energy efficiency. These accomplishments translated into more than (US) $700,000 (or NT$21 million) of savings in corporate and environmental cost.
From those humble beginnings in 1969, 3M has grown from a small, dedicated team of 15 to a large family of over 1000 today; marketing over 30,000 products here and recognized and awarded for being one of the Most Sustainable Foreign Corporations in Taiwan.  In March, 3M Taiwan headquarters officially moved to Nangang Software Park for closer proximity to customers and future commercial trends. Next, 3M Taiwan will strive to apply its five strategic focus areas mentioned above to further create a sustainable living environment and lifestyle alongside its customers, suppliers, the authority and stakeholders in Taiwan.  3M will continue to advance into the future to meet the fast-moving needs of our customers.
