2022 International Symposium on VLSI Addresses Latest Trends in Semiconductors

 

​The ERSO Award 2022 ceremony was held in the International Symposium on VLSI-TSA&DAT to honor the four winners.

Hsinchu, Taiwan—April 19, 2022—The 2022 International Symposium on VLSI Technology, Systems and Applications (VLSI-TSA) and VLSI Design, Automation and Test (VLSI-DAT), will be held from April 18-21 in Hsinchu, Taiwan. Organized by the Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI) with the support by the Department of Industrial Technology (DoIT), Ministry of Economic Affairs (MOEA), the Symposium invited experts from world-leading organizations including Arm, IBM, Intel, MediaTek, Mitsubishi Electric, Stanford University, and TSMC to discuss future trends in areas such as AI chips, advanced packaging, and next-gen compound semiconductors. There will be nearly one thousand participants attending the event onsite and online. 

During the joint plenary talk of VLSI-TSA & DAT on April 20, MediaTek Senior Corporate Vice President K. Lawrence Loh will highlight the challenges ahead for IC industry in the coming decade. He will address issues on overwhelming data generation and the lack of sustainable technology solutions to support essential computing, communications, storage and energy consumption. In a keynote speech, Arm Taiwan President CK Tseng will talk about how the power of technology can unlock the world’s potential, indicating the key elements of future technology and illustrating how Arm fully embraces openness to drive technology innovation. The need for new computing architectures and cross-sector collaboration in a supply chain ecosystem will also be highlighted.

Chih-I Wu, the Chairman of the VLSI Symposium and also Senior Technology Expert at ITRI, in the kick-off press conference, commented that emerging applications, including electric vehicles, 5G, and renewable energy, have underpinned the thriving of compound semiconductors, which are often viewed as a national strategic technology. Taiwan certainly cannot be absent from this field, he stressed. “Our semiconductor industry features a complete supply chain, from design and manufacturing, to packaging and testing, which are considered leaders in the world. We can focus on raw materials and equipment for compound semiconductor production, and then combine with Taiwan’s existing advantages to construct a comprehensive industry chain and secure its leading position in the global market,” he said.

The Symposium also presented the ERSO Award, which honors individuals who have made outstanding contributions to Taiwan’s semiconductor, electronics, information & communications, optoelectronics, and display industries. The winners this year include Qisda Technology Chairman Peter Chen, AU Optronics Chairman and CEO Paul SL Peng, Delta Electronics CEO Ping Cheng, and YoungTek Electronics Chairman/Harvatek Chairman and General Manager Ping Lung Wang.

Pan Wen Yuan Foundation Chairman Chintay Shih in the award ceremony stated that this marks the 16th year of the award, during which 52 distinguished industry leaders have been recognized for their excellent work. “The award was set up to encourage the spirit of driving innovation and development of industries. These four individuals were recognized for their achievements in computer and electronics equipment, optoelectronics, power electronics, and semiconductors. It is hoped that they will continue to utilize their talents to help enhance industry competitiveness,” he said.
