Amid improvements in oncology and medical technology, Fubon Insurance on Sept. 1 announced the launch of a first-to-market “da Vinci cancer surgery insurance policy” that covers advanced minimally invasive care.
The policy provides coverage of da Vinci-assisted procedures for newly diagnosed cancer patients as well as costs for inpatient care. Fubon Insurance said that in developing the policy, it partnered with Intuitive, a global technology leader in minimally invasive care and the pioneer of robotic-assisted surgery, with the aim of bringing health insurance up to speed with advancements in medical technology and enhancing the wellbeing of people across different age demographics.
The safety and efficacy of da Vinci-assisted procedures, performed with one of the world’s most advanced robotic surgical systems, is supported by more than 24,000 peer-reviewed research papers, which in aggregate indicate that the benefits of robotic-assisted surgery can include less blood loss, fewer complications, and less time in hospital, among other benefits.
Currently, da Vinci is used to perform urologic, gynecologic and general surgery, as well as thoracic and colorectal procedures. While the procedure fees of da Vinci-assisted prostatectomy and partial nephrectomy are covered by National Health Insurance (NHI), most da Vinci-assisted procedures are still not among the benefits provided by the NHI system in Taiwan, with patients having to self-pay for surgical fees; in addition to surgical fees, when accounting for medical device and hospital room costs, these out-of-pocket expenses remain a significant burden for patients.
Fubon Insurance Chairman Ben Chen (陳伯燿) said that the company’s upgraded health insurance policy provides not only daily hospitalization benefits but also additional benefits for newly diagnosed cancer patients and coverage for inpatient care as expenses are incurred.
In consideration of the large expenditure on inpatient stays for cancer patients and the challenges they face with shouldering out-of-pocket costs for cutting-edge healthcare technology, Fubon Insurance has launched an industry-leading insurance policy dedicated to da Vinci-assisted surgery, an advanced minimally invasive surgical option, the chairman explained, adding that by purchasing additional protection, cancer patients will not have to rule out da Vinci-assisted surgery out of economic concerns and gain access to advanced minimally invasive care should the need arise.
Intuitive Taiwan Vice President and General Manager Jason Yang (楊繼盛) said that surgical robotics play a key role in the trend toward minimally invasive surgery.
As of 2020, more than 8.5 million da Vinci-assisted procedures have been performed, with surgical volumes seeing accelerated growth in recent years, the vice president and general manager said, adding that through collaboration with Fubon Insurance, hopefully the benefits of advanced medical technology and improvements to post-op quality of life can be made more accessible.
To illustrate, under the health plan a newly diagnosed cancer patient would receive NT$500,000 in reimbursement for da Vinci-assisted surgery, apart from up to NT$300,000 for inpatient care as expenses are incurred. The annual premium for a 40-year-old person would be less than NT$10,000 in the first year, and apart from gaining coverage of costly out-of-pocket expenses, he or she would be able to receive enhanced medical care as well as better ensure his or her quality of life.
Fubon Insurance said that it is passionate about supporting the health of families and the public interest through its innovative insurance products.
In light of the potential health concerns stemming from the pressures and fatigue of fast-paced modern life, Fubon Insurance advises consumers to regularly review whether their current insurance policies provide adequate coverage for inpatient care and cancer treatment, and if needed, taking the opportunity to upgrade protection of themselves and their family members.
